AP reports helicopters hunted rebel terrain in the northwest Congo seeking to free missionary captives. Villagers said mercenary troops captured Tela, about 200 miles from Stanleyville, where youths and locals claimed the rebels planned to move the missionaries.
Cincinnati cartoonist Thom as duGray, age 49, dies after short illness. He drew for the Catholic Telegraph Register and recently won a national Catholic press award for a political cartoon. He lived in Cincinnati and was well known in Catholic media circles.
Calvatore Viscust of Farmingville was charged with felonious use of a firearm after shooting Hamlin, 28, at Core Wi Gaeens. Hamlin was wounded, then allegedly shot the dog to kill it. Brookhaven Hospital reported Hamlin in fair condition.

New Florence Pennsylvania authorities found two bodies and a wrecked plane in a remote area five miles east of town. John J. Peceny, 30, of Hinsdale Illinois, was identified as a victim. the other victim is believed to be a woman. The wreckage showed torn wings and separated engines with a Mayto August flight gap. The defector Hoon Hleng, a battalion officer, allegedly fired to provide proof that North Viet Nam’s Viet Minh troops aid the Pathet Lao.
