Lumber Blaze at Summit Lumber Company Destroys Vast Stockpiles

A blaze at Summit Lumber Company in Western Pennsylvania swept two acres of stockpiles and threatened about 100 nearby homes. Fire crews from six companies battled high winds as flames, fanned by wind, caused widespread smoke and an estimated loss around 500000 with uncertain damages to the yard and stock. Fire Chief William Raffles of Allentown collapsed from smoke, and bulldozers were used to create fire breaks. The fire likely started from a grass fire.
