Paris AP reports the French presidential race is effectively over with Charles de Gaulle likely to win re election. Opponents concede poor prospects while unofficial tallies hint at up to 65 percent first round support. a runoff is possible if needed.
The FAA allocated 7000 for airport turnarounds at Lawrence Airport but the City Council and Airport Authority have not decided whether to accept. The city must consider a 3500 share, possibly plus state funds, while total project cost is 14000 with federal 7000 and possible 9500 from the state. Investigation by City Engineer Johnson and Stewart Long will be presented to Council next meeting.
A fishing boat named Jose Martinez carrying 45 refugees from Cuba to flee communist rule sank after hitting a reef near Cantoy Island in the Yucatan Channel. Mexican Marine Ministry confirmed 36 drowned with eight survivors reported. Survivors planned to seek visas to the United States.

Titusville and Franklin police were notified after two youths took a boat from a store and were stopped. The boys said the vessel was borrowed. they were released after questioning.
A Waterford resident, John Salchak, 20, suffered possible skull fracture and multiple injuries after a tan car careened 650 feet, rolled, and hit a utility pole four miles north of Union City. He remains in fair condition at Union City Memorial Hospital.
