State Police report a former deputy sheriff shot his wife and himself in front of their three children aged 3, 6, and 8 near Franklin. Dale Phenfle, 28, and Goldie Phenfle were identified as the victims. The children witnessed the shooting after which the father killed himself with a shotgun.
Centerville police report that two Bloomfield Township youths face juvenile court action after breaking into a cottage at Canadohta Lake. One boy, questioned after being caught stealing roller skates from Cana dohta Lake skating rink, admitted the burglary of Herbert W. Barker's cottage in Pittsburgh. The break-in occurred October 19.
Republicans swept Erie County on Tuesday but could not break Democratic control in the city of Erie. Mayor Arthur Gardner was re-elected with 24,014 votes to 20,163 for John English. Judge Elmer Burns narrowly won re-election as Republican. County results also re-elected two Republican commissioners Pred Lamberton and Dan Proctor, while Democrat Louis Reymek won one seat.
Mercer Pennsylvania Republicans kept control of Mercer County in Tuesday's election though margins were the narrowest in years. Elizabeth Nicholson was the lone GOP winner among candidates.
Wilbur Lathrop Democrat worker was bitten by a dog while collecting voters at 515 East South Street. The incident halted his outreach as police advised medical care and observers noted tensions at the polling place amid Democratic actions.

National Broadcasting Co. dismisses Charles Van Doren from a fifty thousand dollar annual post for his role in rigged television quiz shows. He had already been removed from Columbia University where he served as a five thousand five hundred dollar yearly assistant English professor. Leisure magazine says it will keep him as associate editor despite the scandal.
Greater Stockton Chamber of Commerce Manager Ralph Ring said a central California city would welcome Charles Van Doren pending a vacancy at College of the Pacific or Stockton College. Ring noted Van Doren could take an industrial research manager role at $5,500, the same salary he earned at Columbia. NBC asserted Van Doren told officials he knew of no coaching on Twenty-One.
Statewide ballots approved three constitutional questions. Legislators will convene annually starting Jan 5, 1958, after a 11th month session. Voters backed annual sessions but rejected increasing public school borrowing capacity for about 2,300 districts and kept 60 day residence change rules. In precincts 9,006, yes for annual sessions 492,955 and no 425,441. School borrowing amendment: yes 405,501. no 589,049. 60 day voter removal: yes 614,743. no 185,174. The measure split opinions among major groups. annual sessions mark a return to pre-1874 practice.
Democrats won seats on Pennsylvania's Supreme and Superior Courts in Tuesday's election, sweeping Philadelphia, Pittsburgh and Scranton. Judge Michael J. Eagen of Lackawanna County was elected to the Supreme Court, defeating Blair F. Gunther. Harry F. Montgomery won the Superior Court seat over Albert W. Johnson. Philadelphia and Pittsburgh mayoral contests also went to Democrats, signaling a strong wave in the 1960 races.
Nationwide off year elections saw Democrats hold solid gains on state and local levels. Kentucky governor and Philadelphia mayor stayed Democratic, while Indiana cities Fort Wayne and Lafayette remained under Democratic control but upstate New York swung Republicans ousting nine Democratic mayors. Salt Lake City elected former Utah Gov J Bracken Lee as independent mayor. Harold Stassen lost again in Philadelphia to incumbent Democrat Richardson Dilworth.

Incumbents largely prevailed but upsets marked Tuesday’s Pennsylvania mayoral elections. In Philadelphia Rich ar dson Dilworth defeated Harold Stassen by over 200000 votes to hold the office. In Pittsburgh Joseph M Barr beat Paul Reinhold by more than 50000 as the GOP gained solace in Titusville and Wilkes-Barre elected Democrats. Read ing Erie Allentown York and other cities also swung to Democrats with several Republican holds. Overall, Democrats led in 12 to Republicans 21 with several races still undecided.
Final audit shows local UF drive at 99 percent of city quota totaling $60 798 89 with additional receipts pushing toward 81 000 expected. Corry Instrument Co added 300 percent contributor status as more funds from miscellaneous sources bring the total closer to completion.
Two Corry youths escaped serious injury when their 1948 auto driven by Richard Proper 18 of West Pleasant street and carrying Jack Foster 17 of West Main street left a curve on Concord Ridge road south of Corry. The car rolled over twice, Foster suffered a deep scalp laceration and was treated by a local physician. The vehicle was a total loss with about $100 damage. Police said charges may be pending after further investigation.
Four indictments returned by Warren County grand jury include Albert L. French Lawrence Melvin Jewell Kenneth M. Wrighton and Frederick Bills. Bills pleaded guilty to drunken driving and awaits sentencing with a jail term.
