CAPE CANAVERAL Fla, A spinning top satellite Explorer VIII roared into orbit marking the United States latest ionosphere study. NASA officials hailed the launch as advancing communications potential with echoes, satellites, and future manned missions while addressing Soviet space competition.
Senator John F Kennedy urged a new volunteer corps of smart young men to join the diplomatic service as a three year alternative to peacetime draft. He said qualified applicants would serve their country without replacing military duty and criticized current ambassadors as ill prepared.

In Pajaro Valley Bank of Watsonville California two embalmed red haired Siamese twin babies were discovered in a suitcase during a routine vault inventory under a state mandate. Bank staff noted an embalming certificate dated in 1499 and a doctor’s certificate, with unclear origins, leaving the time of deposition unknown possibly decades earlier. The remains will be kept in the vault pending a state ruling.
A 26 year old cabinet factory worker Max F Steimling of Selinsgrove was arrested for shooting into three area homes and a Susquehanna University dormitory near Middleburg Pennsylvania. He was charged with malicious injury and related offenses in $1500 bond. No one was injured. Steimling admitted the shootings after being picked up Monday night by state police. Targets included the home of Martinburg Police Chief Hall E Solomon and the home of Selinsgrove officer Bruce Nichols. Authorities say the crime stemmed from a dispute over parking tickets. The Primpey home near Middleburg was also damaged. The dormitory damage occurred at Susquehanna University. The motive remains unclear.
Howard Beatty, longtime Cooperstown resident, burned to death when flames trapped him in his small one room apartment while attempting to fill an oil stove. Coroner rules accidental death from severe burns as investigators say the blaze moved rapidly through his room. Volunteer firefighters contained the fire to Beatty's area with quick action.
The Corry Area Industrial Development Corp CAIDC outlines a plan to elect new directors. Ballots will be sent to contributors before the next election to vote and nominate directors with Chamber of Commerce backing. Dr R Bernard Finch, 42, and Carole Tresoff, 23, face charges over the slaying of Finch's estranged wife Barbara Jean, 36, in July 1959. Attorney Grant B Cooper noted the judge urged unanimity. A prior deadlocked jury of 37 votes was dismissed.

A deer leaped onto a highway two miles east of Columbus injuring no one but sparking a crash that killed the animal. Axel Carlson, 49, of Erie Wisconsin was driving westbound when the deer appeared. Police could not estimate the amount of damage involved. Meanwhile Pittsburgh radio station KDKA celebrated its 40th anniversary, dating to November 2, 1920.
