The Democratic party won Pennsylvania with George M. Leader elected governor by about 239 thousand votes, ending 16 years of Republican rule. He carried Philadelphia, Allegheny and Lackawanna counties and swept the statewide ticket, with Roy B. Furman as lieutenant governor and Genevieve Blatt as secretary of internal affairs. The party gained seats in the state legislature, while Republicans retained a narrow Senate majority.
Incumbents W. W. Waterhouse of Corry and Stanley Blair of Albion won reelection to represent Erie County in the state legislature. Waterhouse 16061 votes and Blair 16057 led over challengers Jilliante Jr. and Arthur H. Meyer, with strong shows across rural areas and notable pockets in Albion Borough Conneaut and Greene Townships. The two deputies previously ran separate districts before a General Assembly act merged lines into one county district.
Voters turnout far above expectations with 2,348 ballots from a 3,200 registration. Republicans tally about 1,350 votes while Democrats land roughly 900 to 1,000. Waterhouse leads Democratic assemblies ticket with 1,445 votes. Blair close behind with 1,394. Local party lines largely followed though crossovers noted.
Joe Brennan, 40, a World War II veteran, defeated Republican James Quisemberry to become the first Democrat to win on the west side of Erie since 1938. The upset reflects a broader shift as Erie's assembly representation remains split with Potasse on the east side re-elected amid a close countywide race.
President Eisenhower announced a new U S note to Russia aimed at peaceful atomic energy use and urged a new phase in U S USSR talks. He named Moorehead Patterson to head U S negotiations on joining an international atomic energy agency under Secretary of State Dulles. Patterson will confer tomorrow on the agency’s importance. Also, Earl E Hewitt Sr won re election as Indiana County representative to the State Legislature with 13,414 votes to 10,420 for Joh L Tesse.
Edmund J. Rogers narrowly missed unseating Congressman Carroll D. Kearns in a district including Erie Crawford and Mercer counties. Kearns led with 52 23 percent late results and carried Corry precincts. Rogers improved in Erie and Crawford but trailed overall with notable city votes.
Voters in Wayne Township and Elgin rejected forming a union school district to include Concord Township as a single administrative unit. Concord Township voters supported the plan by a large margin, voting yes despite Elgin and Wayne Township’s opposition.
Meadville area voters in Meadville West Mead Vernon and Union townships approve a union school plan by a large majority. Unofficial totals show 4 988 Yes and 2 221 No with Vernon closest. Implementation starts July 1 1955 and affected districts retain current boards until then.
A Crawford County common pleas court panel of Paul F. Allen chairman George J. Barea and Victor Miceli ruled for Dale and Gerace Mulvin of Corry against Crale Wetherber H 10 2 Genlorvillies. Plaintiffs awarded 235.19 to cover car damage from a branch collision on Route 0 five miles west of Spartanshire on November 6.
In Fayette County two boys playing in a room found a .22 caliber rifle behind a door. The weapon discharged injuring Cameron R. Bhwraw 9 who died. Brother Jacob 6 held the rifle at the time. Detective Frank B Kane said the incident appears accidental.
Ohio results show Lausche winning a historic fifth term as governor. Republican George M. Bender leads Burke in the Senate contest after polling from 800 places, while Democrats gain one House seat as Rhodes concedes defeat.
