Link Spy To Contact In England
London AP Scotland Yard seized a real estate agent and charged him under the Official Secrets Act in a probe of a transatlantic spy ring. William Cecil Mulvena, 47, was arrested at Westcliff on Sea. FBI agents in Los Angeles had earlier detained German-born sergeant Herbert Boeckenhaupt, 23, charged with conspiracy to pass defense secrets to the Russians. A suspected link to a foreign diplomat was reported. The diplomat, unnamed, was said to work at an Iron Curtain embassy and faced expulsion. Boeckenhaupt allegedly wrote to an England address and received a reply later cited as an overt act. The FBI linked Boeckenhaupt to Aleksey Malinin of the Soviet Embassy in Washington. Boeckenhaupt, who left high school in Superior, Wisconsin, joined the Air Force in 1964 and served at the Pentagon, meeting Malinin in 1965 and 1966. The State Department urged the Soviet diplomat to depart the U.S.

Trial judge hints Sheppard will prove innocence
Don Ahern of Scottsdale testified he and his wife spent July 3 with Marilyn Sheppard’s neighbors the Sheppards. He said Sam Sheppard slept on a couch when they left around midnight. Ahern noted the Sheppards appeared congenial and no arguments occurred. In Saigon a terrorist on a motorbike threw a grenade at a police checkpoint in the Chinese section, killing two Vietnamese men and wounding four others.
