Police report about 50 people arrested at the San Francisco Polk Street Halloween event amid pickpocketing assaults and violence. Separate incidents across Memphis Joliet Flint and Darien noted, including a fatal shooting ambush in Memphis and a noose homicide attempt in a Houston spook house.
Corry saw few pranks and minimal property damage as Halloween celebrations occurred with minor incidents. Police reported leaf fires kept the fire department occupied while vandals struck a Pontiac Buick at 37 West South Street causing $35 damage. Windows were broken at 50 West Columbus Avenue and 237 East Church Street in two separate incidents. A Corry man, William Kingsley, 50, of 802 West Church Street, was arrested for simple assault against his estranged wife Rose Kingsley after an investigation by city police.
Fire crews battled multiple leaf fires as evening alerts rolled in from 6 p m. A Squad T patrol spotted two fires on Marion and Wright streets before dispatching all units. Calls continued through 7 22 p m and beyond with spots on Maple, Park Place, Wright, Market Basket, Liberty, White, Colum, Northwest, William, Pleasant, West Washington, Spring and Ridge, and Mead avenues.
Harrisburg AP reports Democrats push a new tax package amid GOP opposition. The plan delays the personal income tax rise to 2025, raises corporate net income tax to 11 percent retroactively, and seeks $300 million for universities via budget shifts. Critics doubt passage and call for deeper cuts.
Dr Louis Salerno announces Corry Vo-Tech will offer an adult-ed program by year’s start. Opportunities include cosmetology and other trades, subject to sufficient local interest and county policy alignment with county vo-tech.
Anchor House, a local facility for troubled youths, has served about 40 clients since opening with referrals averaging five per week. Joyce McKnight, director, says youths as young as 11 seek help from parents police and schools. The program includes a police diversion track and after school counseling with weekly themed evenings and activities. Volunteers and bunk beds are needed to meet labor standards.
A special Wayne County grand jury urged indictments against Dr. John Shovlin former guards Leslie Simpson Edward Borowski Harold Shook and others over alleged 1963 deaths at Farview State Hospital and later beatings and drugging. The panel sent the case to the regular grand jury for final action and also called for perjury malfeasance and assault charges against several current and former guards.
A 69 year old Spring Creek woman was hospitalized in satisfactory condition after her car collided head on with a truck on Route 426 east of Corry. Walter Dobry of Wattsburg road Erie drove the other vehicle and received minor injuries. Police reported the wreck occurred when the driver lost control, crossed the center line and struck the Dobry truck.
Two Corry students are among four soloists in a forthcoming honors recital at Edinboro State College next Monday at 8 18 p.m. in Memorial Auditorium. Gary Greeley and Alan Vanderhoff, both junior music education majors, will perform Mozart on baritone horn and Lully Guion and Porter songs respectively. Also featured are Edinboro students Scott Friedman from Pittsburgh and Valerie Lang from Glenshaw Va. Public admission is free.
