Work Plan Takes Thousands Off New York Welfare List
ALBANY N Y AP thousands of welfare recipients vanish into the job market under a fledgling work or else program. In nine months 22 748 were placed in jobs and 39 124 were removed for missing interviews or other reasons. Those deemed employable must collect checks in person at local employment offices and accept training or jobs. non pickup or nonacceptance leads to welfare loss. A sample of 455 placements showed 32 percent lasted a week or less, about one third by November end, with some workers moving to other jobs off welfare. The officials stressed the program creates an employment seeking atmosphere and did not assign a dollar value to success.
