Army Balloon No. 1 wins national race in 1928 Pittsburgh chase
Pittsburgh May 31 The 1928 elimination balloon race ended with Army No. 1 captained by H. W. B. Kepner landing at Weesam Virginia after surviving a violent storm. Other entries suffered fatal lightning strikes. Lieut. Evert died instantly and Goodyear’s Withee Morton perished in the crash.

The Model Market sustained about 1000 dollars in fire damage after a blaze started near crowned tires in a Cofsel Grinder. The rear refrigerator and nearby stock were damaged while smoke upset other goods. later, a separate auto collision with a Weat Ridge Transportation bus caused minor injuries to occupants. Second Sneak Theft Hits City Store Cash Drawer
Police investigated two recent thefts in the city after $20 was stolen from the cash drawer of a confectionery store owned by C. G. Mack in the Clough building at Main and Center. A separate theft of $43 occurred at the tailor shop on the second floor of the Pennsylvania Electric Company building on North Center Street. A white overalls-clad man, posing as a workman, took the envelope containing the cash. Authorities have little to go on and few leads.

Five Left Orphans Buried in Shared Grave
In Pottsville Pennsylvania May 1 David Jenkins of Williamstown and his estranged wife are to be buried in the same grave after Jenkins shot the wife and then killed himself. Five orphaned children are in the custody of the sister of Mrs Jenkins. The murder and subsequent death occurred yesterday.
