U S Forces Hit Viet Cong Meeting During Buddha Birthday Ceasefire

U S forces attacked an enemy strategy meeting 28 miles northwest of Saigon during a 48 hour ceasefire to honor Buddha's birthday. More than 200 civilians moved out as fighting continued with Viet Cong dug in. Casualties included at least 50 Viet Cong killed and one American dead with seven wounded.

Titusville Woman Hurt In Area Crash

Stella Michalski a 65 year old Titusville woman was injured when her car veered off the Union City Waterford road struck a tree after she apparently fell asleep police said she was treated then moved to St. Vincent's Erie Hospital with cuts bruises and internal injuries. Damage to the car was estimated at 700. Reckless driving charges are pending today.

Two Local Teens Fined For Possession Of Alcohol

An 18 year old Cambridge Springs youth and a 17 year old Waterford juvenile were fined and ordered to pay court costs for possession of alcohol by minors. Officer Warren Reynolds found two beer cans during a routine stop on West Columbus Avenue. Petrick and the juvenile pleaded guilty before Alderman Norbert Bach and paid 25 dollar fines plus 5.50 dollars costs. In a separate item, Jessop Steel Co. plans a nickel bearing steel price hike effective June 3 by one quarter cent per pound per percent nickel content.

Tastee Freez Changes Hands In Local Purchase

Mr and Mrs William Flick of R D 8 Corry have bought the Tastee Freez business on Route 6 west of the city from Mr and Mrs Alfred Ficcardi who ran it for four years The Flicks assume operation with Mrs Flick managing and husband starting Monday There will be no changes in operation The couple previously ran a barber shop in Union City and plan active involvement in the Tastee Freez venture. A federal grant of 450000 for a highway safety program in Columbia County is extended into 1970 to boost police patrols across 16 sections of the Claverack New Lebanon area following 18 fatal accidents and 23 deaths last year.

The National Highway Safety Bureau will study the Army M151 jeep truck purchased from Ford since 1960. About 3,538 accidents occurred in 1967 with 104 killed and 1,858 injured, as missteps of overturning dominate 36 percent of M151 crashes.

Non-College Students Plan Under Study

The Industrial Division of the Chamber of Commerce outlined a pilot program for non college bound students. Seniors would receive 12 weeks of orientation in industrial plants followed by 24 weeks of part time work, with offices re-opening for girls. Budgeted funds cover about half the costs. The plan targets early industry recruitment and hands on training.
