City to honor war dead with park services

Residents of Lils community will join Americans in observing the 43rd Memorial Day with a parade and program at City Park. Elmer Curvier Post and speakers will lead a 10 a.m. service and a 10:30 a.m. parade route through Main Street and West Washington Street to Center Street. If weather permits the Erie Railroad’s old locomotive replica will be displayed. Local teens will march, and most stores and government offices will close for the day.

Fire destroys six Scranton buildings in early morning blaze

A morning fire in Scranton, Pennsylvania, destroyed six buildings in the main business district and caused extensive damage to four more. All 18 city fire companies and nine suburban units fought the flames for about five hours, with the blaze gutting the Hotel Plaza and several other ground-floor establishments. About 18 firefighters were treated for smoke inhalation. No cause is indicated. The Sun Ray Drug Store and Blue Lantern Restaurant were among the early losses, with the area evacuated safely. Federal Judge Follmer acquitted Sue Gene Shew 21 of Next town Wilkesboro N C of operating a still. Co-defendant Clade Anderson 40 of North Wilkesboro pleaded guilty and received five years probation after agents found a 200 gallon still and 600 gallons of fermenting mash in a Gettysburg area farmhouse cellar on March 13.
