A violent explosion at Luddy Deep in the Easington coal pit entombed 79 miners 900 feet underground. Rescuers recovered eight bodies and a injured man. one group worked through tons of rock while gas fumes raised the risk of further blasts. The East Coast mine employs about 2,200 underground workers and produces 835,000 tons annually.
