Tomato crop losses rise from wet fields and disease

The report notes heavy inroads from stock canker and red blight on tomatoes due to wet, flooded soils. Many plants are too damaged to save, with less than 40 percent of the county’s crop salvaged except for mercury treated seed. Farmers may still plant mercury treated seed for hay seeding in 1948, but it cannot be used for animal feed due to the toxin.
