It is likely that others will be called to fill the quota for the June 1 period. Officials of the Union City bond were uncertain when the boys will be selected for entry, but it is believed they will leave between June 10 and 16. No information has been received yet for the next quota from the local district.
Robert Canin, Joan, in charge of the Corry district office of the State Department of Public Assistance, resigns effective June 1 to join Raymond Manufacturing Company laboratory. Catlin led the office since April 1936 after joining in 1932, rising from investigator to assistant supervisor. Erie county board will meet this afternoon to name a successor, and Miss Charlotte Moore is transferred from the Joeal office craft. Walter J. Miller of Harrisburg named collector of internal revenue for the 23rd district, PA, replacing William Driscoll.
Chicago May 2 The National Safety Council warned the coming holiday weekend could set a record for Memorial Day traffic fatalities. It urged extreme caution as road deaths through four months totaled 10 780 versus 5 290 the prior year with April deaths at 2 600, up 15 percent.
Washington May 29 Associated Press reports a study is under way to divert electricity from civilian to industrial use as the nation awaits an emergency power program. T. R. Tate of the Ped evel Power Commission warns the power supply may become critical by end of 1941 if wartime production scales surge.
A survey shows only 84 Civil War veterans survive in Pennsylvania with nineteen counties reporting no veterans. The oldest survivors include William D Welchby 103 and Julius S holiday 101. highest ranking is A T Anderson 95 former national commander of the Grand Army of the Republic.
Corry’s 1941 school tax was fixed at 20 mills with a $5 per capita assessment, by the Board of Education at & Sects meeting Wednesday. Five appointments were made. The budget was set at 9,107 for the coming year, with estimated needs up over last year by more than 400. Major allocations include general control, instruction, auxiliary agencies, and debt service. State aid and other revenues are expected to offset the hike. A 6- to 8-vote margin approved the levy, with dissent from Mrs. E G Barney. (Continued on Page Six)
London May 29 Associated Press Foreign Secretary Anthony Eden outlined Britain’s war aims in a comprehensive statement. He warned Germany’s misdeeds must not be allowed to reemerge and stressed that lasting peace requires victory, economic health, and a united Europe under a free system. Eden praised President Roosevelt’s fireside address as affirming resolve to confront the most powerful menace and to seek a lasting settlement and internal peace for the continent.
Max Schmeling former world heavyweight champion was killed during the Crete invasion while attempting to escape British imperial forces. An ambulance driver from New Zealand, who witnessed the events, recalled Schmeling posing as a captured German soldier. He seized a rifle during the skirmish and fought briefly before being killed as German parachutists attacked. The driver could not confirm how Schmeling arrived on Crete.
Axis forces on a 30 mile front along the Libyan Reyntien border seized Halfays pass south of Salum as the advance was halted. Reuters says the move aimed to divert British forces from Crete with no clear sign of a general Suez offensive. Washington May 29 Army officials expect the National Guard to remain in service beyond the current year of training under the national emergency proclaimed by President Roosevelt. An early Congress request for authority to retain about 291,000 guardsmen is anticipated as officials weigh demobilizing 18 full divisions, while War Department plans to fill vacancies with selective service trainees or form new divisions.
Corry hospital directors in a special session extended the drive for funds to remodel the institution shifting wards from the third to the first floor. London May 29 More than 100 officers and men from the German battleship Bismarck were picked up after her sinking Tuesday morning. A subsequent air attack sank the British destroyer Mashona, with one officer and 45 men missing, the admiralty announced.
