Memorial Day Established by Gen Logan
Memorial Day observance began with General John A Logan’s order on May 9, 1868, designating May 30 for laying flowers on Union soldiers’ graves. The 1869 proclamation urged nationwide reverence, urging citizens to honor fallen defenders, widow and orphans, and to maintain the memory of the Civil War dead through yearly observance. General Logan ordered that the observance be kept from year to year, with ongoing participation by veterans and communities.
