Fort Stedman Battle Recaptured by Union Forces Ending Lee’s Last Offensive
A veteran recounts the March 1865 assault on Fort Stedman during the Petersburg siege. The Union Ninth Corps, led by General Hartnante, defended and then recaptured the fort, halting Lee’s last major offensive and aiding the fall of Petersburg and Richmond. The piece notes the regiments involved, the pivotal cavalry and infantry actions, and commemorates Pennsylvania’s Third Division with a monument at the fort.

How the Razorback Won a Race
A fragmented Civil War reminiscence recalls cavalry life after Gettysburg. Comrade George Brooks of Union City and Jute of the 16th Pennsylvania Cavalry recount a riverbank horse race era when worn horses recovered quickly and a rough track near the Rappahannock hosted informal races. An old jockey named Johnny Rab keeps the crowd amused as Major and others wager, culminating in a race to settle a bet.
