Freed mental defectives leave Luzerne institution in dispute
Eight so called forgotten men freed from a Luzerne County correctional institution where they had been committed as minors mental defectives. Seven remain in custody due to lack of immediate care. Judge Bonnelly ordered release on writs of habeas corpus and plans call for placement with families or suitable homes under the state welfare department. Dallas was cited as a jail, not a mental institution, and the inquiry revealed more than 130 inmates were held without trials for minor infractions or none at all.
