Capsized motor ship death toll may hit 25
Newport R I May 26 A Navy board of inquiry heard that a 19 year old apprentice seaman captained the launch that capsized in a storm. The death toll was listed at 16 and could reach 25 with 13 missing and 10 unaccounted for. Twenty six sailors were hospitalized after dramatic rescues as crews from nearby boats plunged into rough waters to save men thrown from the launch returning from shore leave to anchored destroyers. The missing were seen in the launch as it left the pier, while others failed to answer roll call on five destroyers at anchor.
