Forces under General MacArthur push toward the Philippines. Japanese defenders are reported routed near the Maffin Bay air drome. Allied troops reach the Tirfoam River as combat actions intensify around Myitkyina with enemy positions collapsing and pockets retreating.
Allied advances near Maffin Bay edge of Tir Foam River signal imminent capture while air strikes target Schouten islands. In New Guinea sector American forces press toward Bink and Wadle Islands as Japanese defenses weaken. Meanwhile Loyang in north China is reportedly captured by Japanese forces, with Chinese troops breaching the Hankow to Peiping line as Myitkyina remains under pressure.
Allied air offensive weakened by poor weather across continental Europe. Vichy and Paris radios report attacks in Lyon St Etienne and near Soissons, but no Allied confirmation. Earlier raids pounded rail centers and airfields from Toulon to Berlin, with thousands of sorties and 6,000 tons of bombs.

New York May 26 The administration drafted a peace plan akin to a world order outlined by Winston Churchill The plan envisions a world council of great powers with enforcement power and a world assembly of other peace loving nations Secretary of State Cordell Hull is said to be discussing the plan with a Senate foreign relations sub committee as reported by the New York Times from Washington
Reports from Bombay, Washington, New York and London cover an earthquake epicenter distant from Bombay, the Navy announcing 65 aircraft carriers active with a total of about 37,700 lanes, Norwegians shot for enemy activity, a Soviet air attack off northern Norway with Nazi fighters shooting down most attackers, and a cautiously optimistic wartime food outlook noting sustained supply with rationing likely.
A nationwide wave of labor walkouts includes 51 000 striking in the Northwest cutting daily lumber output by 9 500 000 board feet. Other disruptions hit Michigan drivers, East St Louis refineries, and Ables t lux plants as unions push wage demands and President Roosevelt is urged to intervene.
May 26 Lt Beaufort G Swancutt was convicted by an army court martial for murdering four people in a March shooting spree. The 12 officers deliberated 30 minutes and recommended hanging. Swancutt testified his mental breakdown caused the killings, admitting marriage and two children while courting Miss Dorothy Daviglas and Miss Lourdine Livermore along with Capt Aubrey G Ser fling and Riverside policeman Arthur Shmipson as additional victims.
Gen Dwight D Eisenhower returned from inspecting British ground forces and announced the invasion will use a white star insignia on vehicles from tanks to jeeps. The star denotes American fighting forces on land and in the air, though air units retain the red white and blue target. Also noted is a trial in Italy where 33 young Fascists face charges of esploting and attempting to reconstitute a Fascist organization.
The Red Cross Blood Bank unit arrives in Corry on June 12 and 13 with I W Knisely as local chairman and ET Cherry as permanent chair for the War Loan drive. Volunteers plan to meet a quota of 180 pints daily, with appointments via the chapter headquarters. The Junior High School plans a special promotion program Tuesday evening June 14 featuring a Gilbert and Sullivan operetta style program. A student cast trained by Mrs. Tucille D Rice prepared the elaborate offering. The event will present 166 students qualified to enter Senior High next fall with Superintendent R S Dewey presenting certificates and Principal Harold Wolfe delivering the address. The program closes with a Junior High song and recessional by the orchestra.
PARKERSBURG West Virginia May 26 The Baltimore and Ohio National Limited killed three persons last midnight when they moved onto the main line after being warned by a telegraph operator. Two young women and a man died as a speeding train passed.
U S Pacific Fleet reports heavy raids on Marcus and Wake Islands. Two carrier planes delivered 148 tons of bombs to Marcus, one shot down and one destroyed on the runway. Wake received 130 tons of bombs, with no enemy planes seen. The raids, part of Montgomery's task force, underline Japan's thinning air defenses along the Tokyo road.
Allied forces report swift advances toward Rome as Fifth and other armies push from the Cassino to Terracina axis. German casualties exceed 12 000 with 2 600 captured in two days. Allied air and ground units inflict heavy damage while routing pockets along the Pontine plain and advancing near Littoria Monte Vaglia and Monte Ciuitelly.
Kittanning Pa May 26 a Sligo woman lost her life when a car plunged over an embankment in Edgewood near Ellheming. The victim was Mildred Burns about 25 of Slim Clarion County Pa trapped inside the wrecked auto. Army sergeant Robert Chester Colbert 25 of Tamad over Md RD 2 a national corps man stationed at Warren ton Va was injured.
