An East Chicago incident ties Dillinger to a deadly clash as two patrolmen are shot. The report outlines subsequent City and state responses, with focus on labor disputes and national policy amid rising unrest.
In Indiana a machine gun attack killed Patrolmen Martin O'Brien and Floyd Mulvihill as they chased a suspicious auto linked to John Dillinger and his gang. Federal agents and police across Indiana and Chicago staged a wide search, with warnings broadcast nationwide for the killer's car.
National Guardsmen fired gas shells at strikers amid renewed clashes at the Electric Auto-Lite plant in Toledo. Reports said crowds swelled in the Champlain street area while rumors of armed sympathizers spread from Chicago Detroit and Cleveland. Deaths and injuries pushed talks for peace. Governor Wise faced calls to withdraw troops and President Roosevelt to intercede.

Five men and a woman rode away in a small black sedan after a botched bank robbery at the South Holland Trust and Savings Bank. One bandit was killed, two wounded, and another collapsed on the sidewalk during the fusillade. A sixth bandit fled but was captured nearby. one assailant was in critical condition.
Cory School District awaits final action on its 1984 85 budget after the Department of Education denied continued daily wage reductions for all staff. The district had previously cut salaries 20 to 25 percent under special authority from Harrisburg. A special board meeting is scheduled for Tuesday May 29 at 7 30 PM to finalize the budget and tax rate before the deadline.
Harrisburg May milk control board issued an order changing cream and buttermilk prices and adjusting wholesale schedules across the state effective after June. The measure remedies complaints since the first price-fixing order, but does not alter consumer milk price while benefiting dealers and retailers. The producer to consumer differential was equalized with changes in buttermilk and cream prices by territory.
Veterans of Foreign Wars in Corry urge support for Poppy Day on Saturday. Poppies costing ten cents or more are distributed by VFW and AmVets Auxiliary to raise funds for disabled veterans and war orphans. Volunteers will be on the business streets all day and evening seeking small donations to maximize relief efforts.
In Pittsburgh on May 25, the Coyne vote fraud trial intensified with courtroom clashes as government and defense sparred over ballot box handling. Prosecutors painted State Senator James J. Coyne as a political boss who ordered operatives at the William Penn Hotel to manipulate ballots for a Republican victory.
Twenty four of a class of 37 graduates at Madison Township High refused to accept diplomas from school board president W. C. Harry in protest of the board not rehiring F. Leroy Black as superintendent. At the ceremony those who refused followed the diploma with their feet from a table on the speakers platform. Brown Shoe strike ends in Missouri Indiana and Illinois affecting 4400 workers.
The Minneapolis truck drivers' strike nears settlement after four weeks of intermittent rioting. Governor Floyd B Olson brokered a substantial agreement with two minor wording changes requested by workers, to be ratified later. National Guardsmen rested as calm returned under a truce.
The United States agreed with Britain on naval limitations to pave the way for the 1935 conference. Invitations were sent to Japan France and Italy for separate talks. Japan hinted willingness to concede cruiser parity if arms limits were equal.
The destroyer Hale left the Galapagos at 7:10 a.m. to transfer American explorer William A. Robinson in critical condition after an emergency appendectomy. Navy surgeons will join the destroyer Buchanan halfway for possible transfer to Ancon. Robinson’s bride, formerly with the Red Cross, remains by his side as planes carry the surgical team toward Balboa.
Two large Gerry municipal projects funded by Federal relief may face weeks of delay as local labor quotas are already full. The North Center sewer and Bear Creek extension await workers, though materials are on hand and final approval is in place. As soon as men are released from other city jobs, construction could begin, with possible restart after the month’s quota shift.
Expo gates to swing open at 9 a.m. tomorrow as workers finalise a brighter, larger display along Lake Michigan. The 1931 World Fair promises revised guides and a spectrum of futuristic buildings in a refreshed Exposition of Progress.
London May 25 The Daily Herald reports a potential duel between former Crown Prince Wilhelm of Germany and Vontschammer Osten Nazi sports chief. Wilhelm allegedly challenged Osten after hearing he sought public sympathy, but Osten declined leaving Wilhelm hoping for a reversal.
May 25 Thno. F. Damont, partner of J P Miorgus, has petitioned the federal government with voluntary offer to settle tax debts. The Department of Justice announced payments of tax with interest and penalties.
