Methodist Church Updates Marriage and Burial Rites
The United Methodist Church in Atlantic City revised its ritual language. Spouses no longer vow “with my worldly goods I thee endow” nor “speak now or forever hold your peace” and the “ashes to ashes dust to dust” pronouncement was dropped. The ruling allows ministers to conduct marriages for divorced individuals with proof of adultery or cruelty. Elements replaced bread and wine with “elements” in communion to avoid wine.
