Sparta leaders hope to secure state funding for a sewer system to keep the borough school, with letters indicating groundwork by Spartansburg officials and discussions with PennDOT agencies. Conrail’s April 1, 1977 rail abandonment may free land for school use, potentially enlarging property and easing the plan.
K Leroy Irvis was sworn in as Pennsylvania House Speaker the first black man in that post. He vows a reasonable budget by June 20, with taxes likely rising and scrutiny on school subsidies. Irvis, 57, notes his income from multiple roles and owes $4,246 in 197K taxes, seeking IRS extension to pay.
