Senate Okays Solon Welfare Rules Veto
The Pennsylvania Senate approved a welfare control amendment giving lawmakers veto power over Welfare Department rules. The measure, added to a pending bill, passed 33 to 13 with most GOP support and some Democrats backing it. Governor Shapp questioned its constitutionality and its potential to disrupt funding, while supporters said it targets abuses and requires rules to be submitted in bill form for legislative revision. The House previously approved the amendment, and final passage is anticipated after a companion vote next week.

Wallace Meets O'Brien About Dem Convention Welcome
Democratic National Committee Chairman Lawrence F. O'Brien told Alabama Governor George Wallace he would be welcome at the party's national convention in Miami Beach. The two men spoke for 20 minutes at Holy Cross Hospital in Silver Spring, Maryland, where Wallace is recovering from bullet wounds. Wallace's staff will have accommodations in Miami Beach, and doctors report some reflex and sensation improvements in his legs, though doctors caution this does not prove paralysis is easing. Wallace was wounded May 15 in Laurel, Maryland, and surgery to remove a bullet may be considered later.
