Poor People's Campaign arrests on Capitol Hill slip into history

Washington AP The Poor People's Campaign made its first group arrests when 12 adults and 6 youths sang and knelt outside a House office building on Capitol Hill. They were released without bond into the custody of a campaign official. Reverend Ralph David Abernathy said SCLC officials were not present but will be in the future. Reverend Jesse Jackson, a campaign lieutenant, said mass arrests are not yet planned. Police cleared two vans of demonstrators and stopped further bookings after Jackson persuaded all remaining protesters to leave. The group had numbered about 200. He warned that arresting them could swell numbers to 8000. The episode highlighted leadership tensions within the campaign. Continued on page six.
