A bi plane from a quartet en route to New Brunswick for a mass spraying operation made a rough landing at Lawrence Airport. The craft tipped and damaged its wing spars as it flipped on landing. The pilots, including Mel Frell of Yakima Washington, inspected the damage.
Two Hoffman brothers from West Main and West Washington streets are placed atop the local draft inductee list for June. Donald, 19, and Floyd, 18, will depart June 1 for Harrisburg as volunteers under a plan skipping pre induction physicals. if they pass, they advance to training. Ronald Hamilton, a former National Guard member, is also called up for immediate induction. another prospective inductee departs for pre induction tests in June.
Indications President Eisenhower may back a plan to divert the Allegheny River to feed a proposed Kinzua dam on the Seneca Reservation. Seneca leaders warned the project would require about 9 000 acres, displacing 260 families and violating a 1704 treaty. The case drew officials including Seaton and Seneca leaders in ceremonial dress as discussions continued with no clear decision.
Governor LeRoy Collins granted sanctuary to Mr and Mrs Morse? Elllis the Jewish foster parents of 6 year old Hildy McCoy amid a custody dispute with her natural Catholic mother Massachusetts authorities had sought to remove the child under a faith based adoption law. The governor framed the case as about the child's right to be loved and wanted and allowed Hildy to remain with the Ellises who cared for her since birth. The decision drew cheers from supporters and a tearful reunion plan as the family prepared to fly home to Florida
Meadville engineer Walter Shifter dies in a car crash when his car struck a tree on the Meadville to Conn route. The driver Fred Akers of Youngstown Ohio reported the collision. Shifter, en route home from a Paton executive meeting, had joined NW Kellugg Co. in Jersey City in 1953 and leaves a brother Norman Shifter of Reading, Pa.
A bill introduced in the State Assembly proposes raising the city realty tax mill rate to 16 mills from 12. Corry, mayor of Duquesne, champions the measure saying the additional five mills would fund future capital purchases. In Erie County about 400 self employed farmers now qualify for old age insurance benefits, the social security office announced. Owners or operators aged 65 or more who earn under 1200 dollars yearly are fully retired. those earning 1200 to 2080 get partial relief. Retirements after age 72 are not required to receive benefits, and applicants should bring 1955 and 1956 federal income tax forms and their social security account card. Visit the Corry post office on Mondays from 9:80 to 4:00 for guidance.
