Stevens Takes Responsibility for Army Actions in McCarthy Charges
Stevens testified he assumed full responsibility for Army actions while denying any orders from President Eisenhower or Secretary Wilson to prepare charges against McCarthy and aides. Senator Symington traced command from the White House through Wilson, Stevens, to Adams and pressed whether White House staff could issue orders to John Adams. Stevens affirmed that only the President or those in the line of command could issue orders to Adams.
