Washington May 24 Senator Gillette urged a joint congressional committee to probe reports that American firms furnished war materials to Axis powers. He cited petroleum shipments to Japan and skin in the game of royalties on German glass and other supplies, and suggested foreign subsidiaries aided Axis commerce. He introduced a resolution for a five member Senate and five member House panel.
Bertram Schreck Engor 43 brother of Miss Newton Schreckengost of this city remains in critical condition at Warren General Hospital after being trapped in his burning home at Baines early Thursday. He tried to salvage papers, severed a finger, pushed through a window to escape, and suffered burns to both feet and shock. Several blood transfusions have been given as he fights for recovery.
A Greek individual, Vassal Lavi Mihailof, attempted to shoot the Italian king during a royal visit to Albania on May 17. Dispatches from Tirana say all shots went wild, with Mihailof saved from lynching by bystanders and later yielding to authorities. The Albanian premier Shefket Verlaci led the vehicle. Mihailof blamed Albanian officials for not respecting him. A trial in Albania’s court system is anticipated.
Rome reports four British cruisers sunk or damaged by Italian torpedoes during days of Mediterranean fighting. Two Grifoni cruisers were sunk by Tunisian craft. Com unique adds that Dido and Leander class ships were involved. A Russian submarine allegedly sank a 12,000 ton merchantman in the Atlantic.
Memorial Day week in Corry will begin with a Poppy Day observance and church services at 11 tomorrow in the Methodist church. Rev. P. A. Galbreath will deliver the sermon on Good Soldiers. Veterans groups invited. Wallace W. Wellman, former Company A leader, to give the Memorial Day address. Corry Veterans Council reports plans for a larger procession and early next week will announce the full program.
London May 24 Churchill warns Britons to heed a government leaflet guiding civil defense in case of invasion. He says weeks may pass before invaders are defeated and urges civilians to move only when instructed, seek safety, stay put during battles, and support counterattacks from bombers. Home guards and mobile columns will engage as needed and the rest follow orders to carry on.
Premier Eamon De Valera summoned the Irish parliament to meet Monday to hear a statement on Britain's conscription in six Ulster counties. Observers expect him to elaborate on defense and economic difficulties while Belfast reports an anti conscription meeting echoing the 1917 pledge to resist compulsory service.
In Crawford County an inquest into Merland Knickerbocker 18 grandson of Rev J A Higley Beaverdam area found the car accident that killed him May 15 involved driver Thomas Henderson 21 Mendville who did not testify and is jailed on a larceny charge. Delmar Williams of the state motor police led the investigation stating Henderson was operating a likely stolen automobile at the time.
The Department of Highways in Erie County plans to improve 164.2 miles of road this season. Work by department forces will supplement existing contract projects along the Wattsburg to Corry stretch on Route 25099 and nearby areas. D. J. Driscoll, trustee for Associated Gas and Electric Co of New York, was injured in an automobile accident yesterday, 19 miles east of St. Marys, according to reports from St. Marys, Pa.
Government data show a 3.7 percent rise in living costs from August 1999 to April this year with food prices leading the surge. Meats and farm products show notable hikes, with many cuts up by a few cents per pound and other staples climbing as households cope with the ongoing emergency period. Rent and clothing also increase, though to a lesser extent, as many families face higher monthly expenses.
Berlin reports German high command says four British battle cruisers were destroyed in heavy action near Greenland.
