Pennsylvania Senate approves Little WPA work relief bill

In Harrisburg on May 23 the Pennsylvania Senate passed a bill to outlaw the workless dole, a move Republicans tout as curbing relief costs while Democrats call it a return to slave labor. The measure, backed by Senator Henry J. Pierson, would require able bodied relief recipients to work on public or private projects with pay through relief grants and would end eligibility if work is refused. The plan seeks county boards to compile lists of employables and assign them to municipal or institutional jobs, with a two thirds relief hire cap debated earlier as part of broader public assistance reforms. The vote was 46 in favor.
