Researchers from Massachusetts General Hospital analyzed data from 2,222 Boston area students to predict later drug use. Using nondrug factors such as academic performance and cigarette smoking from 1969, the computer showed 68 to 81 percent accuracy in separating nonusers, marijuana users, and hard drug users, underscoring statistical probabilities rather than certainties. The study, to be presented at a National Academy of Sciences meeting, highlighted five 1969 factors including rebelliousness, obedience, grades, smoking, and attitudes toward smoking.
