Zip Codes Do Not Ensure Faster Mail Delivery AP Test Finds
The AP tests show eight of ten letters without zip codes arrived as fast or faster than ziptized mail in six cities nationwide. A prior test 15 months earlier yielded similar results. USPS officials say zips aid processing and sorting but three cent airmail stamps did not guarantee quicker delivery in 45 percent of cases. Delivery varied widely by city and day, with local letters in St. Louis, Los Angeles and Houston averaging about one day. Fridays were often the slowest mail day.
