United Press dispatch from Harrisburg reports Democrats claim strong support for James Guffey in the gubernatorial nomination contest. Notable party figures and county results indicate tension among factions as nominating choices for governor, lieutenant governor, and Congress emerge amid state legislative maneuvering and Senate concerns.
Special to the Journal reports Erie area results with Vonnewoll defeating Gut tay for the Derowide nominating seat by a large margin, while Milton W. Shrave carries the county over Dickey for the Republican Congressional nomination by about a thousand votes. Melvin Smith loses to Shunk in the Assembly race by under two hundred, and Hovee defeats Wil bert in the first district race by a small margin.
Washington May 22 The United States will have between five and six million troops in France by July 1919. Representative Caldwell of New York addressed the House stating official figures show mobilization total of about 2,088,000 including 1,889,000 enlisted men and 148,088 officers. Caldwell noted over the next year the force would grow, with gains in troop movements in early May.
A large crowd attended a Lake Pleasant gathering last evening honoring Mie drat with attendees from Bele, Anton Gliy, Corry and others. The event featured a contest, dancing, and refreshments, arranged by HL Kinmey for recently drafted men, and was described as one of the finest since records began.
The Standard Mumbuskis Company invites Corry residents to a flag raising at the plant on Thursday at 10:10.
