After nearly two years of negotiati ons four powers fail to reach a settlement on postwar Austria. Moscow insists on Yugoslav territorial claims while Western powers resist. Only agreement reached limits Austrian army to 58 000 troops.
The Sparta High School class of 1948 held its commencement in the school gym with a capacity audience. Rexford Still presented diplomas. awards recognized students including Malund Crosby Lee Stanbro Catherine Smith Bever Piste Elizabeth Stewart Jacqueline Brown and others. Richard Witmer announced Legion awards for leadership and scholarship.

Berlin May 21 United States occupation authorities retaliated over Russian border actions by restricting entry of Soviet missions into the American zone to Helmstedt. The move, a reciprocal step affecting only official missions, does not close the border between zones.
John Howard Lawson and Dalton Trumbo were each sentenced to a year in jail and fined 92,000 for contempt of Congress by federal judges in Washington. Trumbo, writer of 30 Seconds Over Tokyo, and Lawson, author of Smashun and Blockade, denied new trials after refusals to cooperate with the House Un American Activities Committee.
Grim rescue efforts followed a roof fall at Clinchfield Coal Co No 2 mine near Dante West Virginia. About 1100 tons of rock blocked the shaft four miles underground. Four other miners were slightly injured, and relatives waited as bodies were recovered. Names listed include J M Smith Ay uris Artie Arnold Vickers Harold Park Oakley Creger Troy Phillips and Rasnick. Dante is in Russell county near the Dickinson county line.
The post office invites bids for the catering contract of the Widnathan and Teah drug store sub-station in Low City. Bids due Monday May 4. station operates 8 am to 12 pm with services after main office hours. The sub-station serves downtown businesses and Second and Third wards residents.

The Post Office Department says it will end All American Air Mail pickup and delivery in several states including Pennsylvania Ohio and Kentucky due to rising costs and inefficiencies. Deputy Portmaster General Burgers noted communities served by conventional air mail may see service adjustments while steps are taken to improve routes.

The incident occurred about 8:30 p.m. while operating a trimming saw after a wood block rolled. Foal was taken to Corry Hospital and described as in good condition despite the injury.
