Last Of Three Parts On Smoke Detectors Installations Rise
In a three part series Louise Cook explains how Americans increasingly install smoke detectors. The National Fire Prevention and Control Administration projects sales near 200 million dollars by 1980 and seeks wider adoption by 1990. Regulators in over 30 states require detectors in new buildings, with 92 brands meeting UL standards this year. Detectors cost 30 to 50 dollars and alert with a loud warning as they sense rising smoke.

Strip Mining Bill Nears Passage After Veto Fights
WASHINGTON AP After six years of battles and two presidential vetoes Congress moves toward enacting strict strip mining controls. The Senate version mirrors the House bill with exemptions and western land allowances. Carter has promised to sign, while environmentalists say the Senate is more lenient in several areas. In Pittsburgh AP convict Delker found guilty of first degree murder in 1973 killing of Western Penitentiary guard Captain Walter Peterson. U S Transportation Secretary Adams announces 4 8 million federal rail grant to protect Boston area commuter service and riders. The bill would impose up to 35 cent tax per ton on coal to curb past abuses and require restoration of mined lands to near original contours.
