Union City Tax Appeal Hits City Budget
Union City officials rejected a tax fund appeal after a 4,000 subsidy was denied to lower city assessments. A Superior Court ruling cut a 70,000 tax on York and Postiti property, triggering calls to hire Dayton Jones and Layton to equalize countywide assessments with county funding. Commissioners tabled the plan for now, warning the county may not underwrite losses.

Relief load in state shows increase across weeks
In Pennsylvania the general relief rolls rose by about 122 cases to 639 per 100, 000 as the weekly totals climbed for a third straight week since late April, driven mainly by bituminous coal regions. The upturn spared most counties from large losses, with unemployment relief curbed by coal shortages and lay-off effects in other industries. About 257,000 people receive public assistance, including 89,000 old-age, 42,000 general, and 13,000 dependent children. In Erie County, 2,504 general assistance cases affected 3,515 people. In New Castle, William Bardley, 45, was killed and housekeeper Mrs. Fae Critchlow, 39, seriously injured by a .22 revolver. Bardley reportedly killed himself, with Critchlow’s shooting under investigation. Booth Tarkington, famed American novelist, died at his Indianapolis home aged about 78. Edward Lantey, 28, of Oakmont, drowned after leaping into the Allegheny River to extinguish burning clothing during an all-night fishing party.
