City police cite 18 year old Ray mond L. Amy of 285 West Washington street for reckless driving after a high speed incident on South Center Street at 10 a.m. Saturday. Amy paid a $10 fine and $5 costs before Alderman Merle Ottaway.
A severe midafternoon storm near Sinclairville caused extensive damage estimated at 500000. Mayor Peterson declared a state of emergency and convened officials to assess needs as 61 homes suffered damage from broken windows to complete destruction. One injury reported and nine cows killed in barn collapse.
Incumbent Arlen Specter seeks reelection as district attorney with State Rep Thomas Gola unopposed as partner on the favored ticket. A. Charles Peruto, noted controller, remains a strong Democratic contender in the mayoral rollup while David Berger, former city solicitor, and James J. Walsh of Scranton emerge in statewide bids.
Thomas J. Monaghan and Ray B. Bracy of Allentown both seek re election as Democrats along with H Gordon Payton a Republican of Bethlehem, all aiming for continued office this year.
