In Corry a major appeal seeks 125000 for the Corry Area Industrial Development Corporation to fund a citywide revival. The editorial urges every resident to invest, framing CAIDC as essential to prevent decline and restore prosperity through shared civic effort. Invitations sent to 275 business professionals and others in Corry for a kickoff dinner at the VFW hall on May 31 at 6 45 p m. Crawford County plans unite Sparta Merged with Rome Township districts to form a single administrative unit and establish a joint elementary center. The move would end the chance of Sparta joining the Corry Jointure and shifts Rome Township toward consolidated attendance, with Rome students now at Sparta Merged for secondary education. Final action rests with the State Council of Education.
In the United Presbyterian Church USA general assembly, Dr. Herman Lee Turner of Atlanta won the moderator post by a 471 to 469 vote over Dr. Edler Hawkins of New York. Turner, an outspoken integrationist and author of the Atlanta Manifesto, gained fame for urging racial harmony and public school support in the South. Hawkins made history as the first Black nominee for the denomination’s top elective office.
The 1960 Buddy Poppy drive launches as Mayor J Fred Kinley buys the first flower from Cathy Grabowski, poppy sales chairman and wife of Ray Grabowski of the Veterans post. Poppies, made by disabled veterans in VA hospitals, will be sold tomorrow and Saturday to raise funds.
The Soviet Union urged a rapid U.N. Security Council session to address American spy flights over the USSR and counter Washington’s plan for international aerial inspection. Andrei Gromyko filed a telegram for an emergency meeting, with Moscow aiming for Friday or Saturday to dominate the agenda before the open skies proposal.
In East Berlin Khrushchev blasts the United States while pledging peace coexistence. He says U S must clear obstacles for a new summit over Berlin and Germany peace. he will confer with Ulbricht and Grotewohl, avoiding new threats to West Berlin.
State Police in Corry are probing two area crashes with about 1100 in vehicle damage. First crash occurred about 4 20 p m east of Blgin on Lovells Station Road, with Samuel Migliacci 28 Washington Street Union City drifting into oncoming traffic and hitting Warren Reynolds 24 West Bendamet Corry. No injuries reported. Second crash at 6 30 am south of Centerville on Route 8 involved Ot Ross 82 Tryonville attempting to cross Route 8 and colliding with Charles L Emerson 38 Route 1 Cou ntville. damage 500 to Ross, 380 to Emerson. No injuries.
Clymer readies for the Tulip Festival with windmill displays and large tulip beds. Free parking will accommodate visitors strolling the streets to view displays and the hobby show in the Community building. The parade and queen’s throne will mark Saturday, with an evening program titled Our Heritage in the school auditorium.
The 1960 census shows Titusville at 8,526 residents, down 397 from 1950. Meadville declines by 1,516 to 16,556, not counting nearby townships. Crawford County totals fall to 77,695 as part of a regional Pennsylvania trend.
Funeral services will be held in Jamestown for Pred J. Anderson 31 a father of three who died from internal injuries after a one car crash on Route 74 Harmony N Y early yesterday. A coroner ruled accidental death. Anderson was westbound when his car left the road struck a concrete abutment and rolled end over end. Born in Yankee Bush Pa he attended school in Superior Grove before moving to Jamestown.
Mrs. Lawrence Hosier of Union City Area High School has been named one of 340 teachers nationwide to receive a journalism summer study fellowship. Funded by Newspaper Fund, Inc. and Wall Street Journal grants, the program costs total 160000. Hosier selected the University of Iowa for the course, the only Pennsylvania teacher honored.
Dennis Weaver who plays Marshall Dillon's assistant Chester announces he will leave Gunsmoke after his six year contract ends following the 1960 61 season. He says he is fond of the character but feels limited in development. CBS has not announced his replacement.
