Allied dispatch from Rome May 19 reports Field Marshal Sir Harold Alexander accusing Marshal Tito of intends to claim territory in Austria and Hungary by force. Washington May 18 War Mobilization Director Fred M. Vinson announced a 50 cent subsidy per hundredweight to cattle feeders to push heavier cattle to feedlots and boost civilian meat. Corry resident CG H Holden of Raymond Mfg Co barely escaped serious injury when a drunken driver sideswiped his Oldsmobile about ten miles from Sharon. Holden steered right to avoid collision, the other car crashed into Holden’s left side, went over an embankment, and the driver was arrested by State Police. Holden returned to Corry with only minor bruises. his car needs major left-side rebuilding.
Corry faces near complete meat shortages as wholesalers and packers curtail shipments. Officials warn a total halt without new permits and tighter GPA controls. In Bern on May 19 Hiller sought to kill all American and British prisoners in the war’s last days. An official told Prof Carl J Burckhartt, president of the International Red Grass committee, that the unnamed Nazi official might have been Ernst Kaltenbrunner, an aide of Himmler, discussed in Nuroh.
The Canning sugar ration program has started at the rationing board office amid forms shortages. About 1500 application requests arrived, 1300 forms prepared, and 200 mailed daily with more to follow once blanks arrive. Applicants must complete and return forms with Spyre Slump No 13 for each person. The allowance remains 15 pounds per person. Fred Ewing of Baldwin Brothers Construction Company bought the Hepler garage building on the north side of Franklin street from Mayor Frank Hepler.
