Pressure on allies to widen Asian Vietnam role stalls
The Johnson administration told senators it is applying maximum pressure on allies to contribute more combat troops in Vietnam but privately officials report little success. Sen. Percy argues more Asian forces could deter North Vietnam and the Viet Cong. Byrd notes Korea and the US are main combat forces. Australia, New Zealand, and the Philippines contribute smaller numbers. The dissenters’ statement, supported by McGovern and Church, underscores ongoing war misgivings despite a proclaimed majority backing.
