ST MARYS Pa May 1 An inmate of Elk County Home was killed instantly when struck by a Pennsylvania Railroad passenger train at a crossing. Elmer Bloom 69 head crushed apparently failed to hear the approaching train and walked into its path. A stepson Frank Robinson of Bryndale and a stepdaughter Mrs Pearl McWilliams Bradford survive.
Kovno Lithuania May 18 President Antanas Smetona commuted death sentences against four Memel Nazis to life imprisonment. They were convicted by court martial for murder tied to a separatist plot aimed at splitting Memel from Lithuania. The move aimed to avert German demonstrations and tensions over Memel.
A cyclone-like storm hit Worth Texas on May 18 injuring six people, destroying a city school building, and leveling three blocks of homes. The Riverside area suffered the worst damage as wind and debris collapsed walls and trees. One home shifted twenty feet while interiors were jolted but some items remained undisturbed.

Cook County officials say 30000 families last received groceries 80 days ago and 75000 more face Monday shortages. Altus Oklahoma May 18 A torrential rainy today flood swept through this area part of the great Dust Bowl. About a dozen persons were reported drowned with three white youths and nine Negroes among the victims. Many families were marooned as waters flooded roads bridges and homes and communication lines were cut making confirmation difficult. Rainfall reached seven inches washing out bridges and disrupting the gas system.
Mrs. Gilford Pinchot urged unemployment insurance at the Philadelphia convention of the Pennsylvania Federation of Business and Professional Women's Clubs. Attendees included Helen Schiurami and Wilma Rich with Myra Thomas from Corry. The talk linked unemployment protection to ending wage disparities and referenced the 40-hour week bill for women before the legislature.

May 1 in Los Angeles, dare-devil test pilot Breese and Colonel Roscoe Turner engage in an air speed feud. Harrisburg May 18 Harry Ritter resigns as chief investigator for the state insurance department effective May 1 after 21 years with the agency.
