Tape recordings used in Mays murder trial shock trial
A tape recording made by two of three young defendants in the Mays murder case was admitted in Venango County Court. Douglas Wayn Keller and Floyd A. Resinger recorded statements while Riddle aided, with the judge instructing the tape be used only for alibi context. The beating victim, Robert Warren Mays, 68, of Rockland Township, died July 23, 1959. The trio, including Gould Riddle, 23, of Polk, face trial. Riddle is alleged to have delivered the fatal blow with a weapon. Smoothed testimony followed, with court staff and the press cleared for playback. The tape was produced by State Police investigators Lewy and Penman of Erie. The judge ordered surveillance of the recording’s use in court. The case centers on robbery motives and the alleged statements by the defendants. The court reconvened with the recording played for the jury, but content limited to statements by the defendants. Sheriff and court officials remained present. The suspect, Riddle, was named as the principal, and the other defendants described as collaborators. The trial was set to continue with further proceedings as scheduled.
