Northwestern Pennsylvania Elks to gather in Corry with about five hundred visitors from Erie Warren Greenville Meadville and others. Nine hole golf course luncheon and dance planned with district officers to be elected and state officers expected.
Five Civil War veterans John Bell Jason Smith James Davids Oliver Caster and Jay Smith will be honored at Memorial Day services in the City Park on May 30 General Chairman Walter H Scott of the Veterans of Foreign Wars announced plans for an impressive program with group singing by Commander G T Bergman American Legion solos by Mrs Bess Kinley songs by Gerry High School trio and band selections. A parade will precede the ceremonies and Company A members will form a firing squad at the cemetery while flowers are presented to honor fallen servicemen.
A boy, son of an unnamed couple, escaped injury when struck by an automobile driven by E. Davis of 812 West Wayne Street at the Bond and North Center streets intersection. He was taken to a physician for examination and suffered no broken bones or severe injuries.
Secretary of Highways Warren Van Dyke today awarded a contractor the construction of three small bridges and the grading and drainage of 44 miles of Route 8 between Beaverdam and Wallsburg to A J Fasemeyer Erie at the low of $66,659.65. The world will be financed from WPA highway allocation. Bids on the improvement were opened at Harrisburg May 8.
In Gordonsville Virginia on May 16 a sheriff and a posse battled two armed Negro men amid a massive search. The fight ended with the deaths of the two attackers and Sheriff William Young and a man named Wales. Numerous injuries and a large police response followed as investigators moved through the wreckage.
A 14 year old Julia Ann Wolfinger of Etna will speak in Washington on Monday before delegates from the eastern United States urging flood control action by Congress. She attends the mass demonstration of flood control advocates, hosted by the Allegheny County League of Women Voters, as the Omnibus flood control bill nears Senate consideration Tuesday.
Two versions of a Pennsylvania unemployment insurance bill to align with federal Social Security were before the legislature. One bill proposes a maximum $15 weekly benefit with employer payroll assessments rising from 1 to 3 percent. a second offers $10 weekly. Senate and House actions and federal pool funding are outlined along with related social security measures.
United Press reports seven young inmates from a national training school for girls attended a White House garden party hosted by Mrs. Franklin D Roosevelt. The event followed her visit to the reform school where conditions were described as medieval and barbarous. Negro and white guests sat apart as at the school. Cabinet wives attended a separate picnic on the lawn.
A truck loaded with seven barrels of whiskey crashed into a telegraph pole in Philadelphia on May 16. Roy Perkins 8, his mother Howard, and Mrs Helen Benner, all of Philadelphia, died in the blaze. Firefighters battled flames that spread to Richmond Presbyterian church as rescuers tried to reach the top floors.

Two men who slugged four deputy sheriffs and escaped from Brooke county jail in Wellsburg were captured in Mt. Pleasant. Ralph Richards, 28, of Pittsburgh, and Frank McCulley, 23, of Wheeling, were seized at the home of M. M. McCulley, described as a relative of the Wheeling man. Also noted Pittsburgh vacation news: Bethlehem Steel announces two week vacations for all five year employes at Rankin plant this summer, part of U. S. Steel movement.
Rome May 18 Italian senate unanimously approved royal decrees annexing Ethiopia to Italy proclaiming King Victor Emmanuel emperor and appointing Marshal Pietro Badoglio Governor General and Viceroy. The secret ballot by 827 senators surprised observers as several non-Fascists participated in the vote.
Claude Pugh, called the brains of a deadly McAlester prison riot escape, surrendered to a posse near Savanna Oklahoma. He was the ninth of eight escapees captured after the riot that killed C. D. Powell, the prison brickyard superintendent. Pugh was taken back to the penitentiary and placed in solitary confinement. Authorities described no quarter as the manhunt spread across four ranges. The posse organized by Jesse Dunn and John Haswell surrounded Pugh two miles west of Savanna after a tip from a farmer.
Four members of a wedding party in Youngstown were killed when their car collided with an Erie freight train at a crossing near Here. Three others in the car were injured. The group had just attended a wedding and were traveling to Lake Milton for a weekend trip. The deceased are Peter Paschell, Patrick Paschell, John Carrozine, and an unidentified boy.
Taxpayers organized to push back on a proposed tax increase and aim to bring a large delegation to Monday evening’s budget and tax levy meeting. Chief of Police Joan D. Flanigan reports a band of gypsies traveling in a Chevrolet truck robbed two residents in the Spartansburg district yesterday and fled the area. They stole $3 from Jacob Soliday near Briton Run and $5 from Ransom Weidner of Glyndon. authorities guarded highways into the city but the suspects did not appear.
