Harrisburg May 16 The Republican majority in the state senate approved seven tax measures aimed at generating about 40.675 million dollars for unemployment relief over the coming year. The 1 cent cigarette tax and a 2 million dollar gross receipts tax hike were among the enacted bills, with final passage facing adjustments in the house and a pending conference on two items.
In Long Island a mob gunfire killed Thomas Protherbe alias Thomas Porter and wounded a brunette companion. Protherbe, 27, linked to the Dutch Schultz gang, died at the scene. the woman was taken to St John’s Hospital and gravely hurt. Police note the early label of small time gangster but continue to probe.
United Press reports a 4.125 million dollar damage suit filed in federal court charges Aluminum Corporation of America with violating trust laws. The action was brought by the Sheet Metallic Corporation of Jackson Michigan, withdrawing a prior suit in Detroit. The petition alleges the Aluminum company conspired to pay above fair market price for virgin aluminum due to alleged monopoly power.
Warren, Pa May 16 Information concerning members of a rum running gang with headquarters in Erie Pa district was sought today by Police Chief B J Gillen in his search for the ri mers of Walter Myers Warren police informer Chief Gillen said he has learned that the gang was engaged in transporting liquor over the state line and that Myers was known to some of its members when he lived in Greenville and Meadville Pa before coming to Warren last summer Continued on page four
President Roosevelt announced the start of immediate distribution of the 4 billion dollar recovery fund. He convened the advisory allotment committee at the White House to rapidy channel money toward ending Wheat relief by July 4, 1936. Initial plans include 400 million for grade crossing elimination and highway construction and 40 million in construction applications ready for review.
In Atlanta Georgia May 16 drys narrowed wets lead in Georgia's special election to repeal the 28 year old liquor law to about 6 500 votes. Returns from 1 303 of 1 752 precincts showed 75 008 for repeal and 9 474 against. Official tabulation may be needed to determine repeal outcome.
In New York on May 1 the Jesuit weekly America! accuses Father Charles E. Coughlin of risking all on doubtful economic legislation and urges him to focus on reforming the popular mind instead. The critique is voiced by Rev. Wilfred Parsong S. J. editor, noting the apparent lack of advocacy for Pope Pius XII's quadragesimo anno.
May 16 Paris reports France ready to accept invitations to negotiate currency stabilization. The decision follows Henry Morgenthau Jr. statements that Washington will not block world efforts to stabilize foreign exchange. In Cannonsburg Pennsylvania May 16 drivers of two trucks for a grocery chain were beaten and attackers fired on Route 19. Trucks and contents destroyed in an estimated loss of ten thousand dollars. The Great Atlantic and Pacific Tea Company contractors Benjamin P Wiesman and D A Maxwell said the assailants were striking drivers.
Six youths from local schools fill city and school offices for Boys Day. Mayors, police chief, postmaster, and board of education president serve, while Rotary Club head oversees duties. Students gain insight as mayor, chief, and others handle calls and conduct duties.
The trial of Joseph Lich Steinmetz and Rev. John J. Leonard, charged with murdering Steinmetz's 16 year old bride Ruth, resumes after a one week recess. Dr. Milton Holper of the medical examiner's staff was set to be the state's first witness.
Seville May 16 Juan Ignacio Pombo 21 year old Spanish aviator began a cross Atlantic flight toward Mexico City to visit his sweetheart in Mexico City He started from Seville at 9 53 am bound for Villa Cisneros then Dalur Natal and onward to Central and South America His monoplane Emerald Coast renamed Santander carries 450 liters of gasoline and 0 ters of oil weather reports promise fair skies near Cape Juby as he leaves for the Atlantic crossing The flight is a promise to his sweetheart and a hometown booster for Santander.
United Press reports Booth Penn Oil Company slashed Pennsylvania crude by 10 cents per barrel, triggering broad declines across the crude market. Southwest Penn Pipe Line at 1.82 dollars, Eureka Pipe Line 1.87, Buckeye Pipe Line 1.77, with Tidewater Pipe Line cutting 15 cents to 2.20 in Bradford and Allegheny districts.
Harrisburg May 16 Harry L Hopkins federal relief administrator praised the general assembly for approving revenue bills and told Governor Earle he would immediately send seven million dollars to the commonwealth for relief purposes.
Corry sees a shakeup as two new caretakers take posts in the Department of Highways. Lacey of Marion Street replaces Ray Burley, while John Casey of Conoy Township succeeds Melvin Amy. W. Reagan of Union City also becomes caretaker, with all appointments effective after yesterday’s close of work. The department closed its fiscal year on Wednesday, May Asia, with a three day suspension anticipated.
Science professor Holly Saunders of Alfred University demonstrated liquid air experiments before the Kiwanis club at Hotel Corry. Observations included freezing goldfish into brittle forms and transforming berries into rocklike matter, showing how oxygen condenses to liquid and alters substances. Attending members included H. Three Braddock ex policemen Phillip Cognito Peter McKelvey and Thomas Medhan pleaded no defense to charges connected with the $1000 theft of merchandise from a Braddock shoe store last May. They were taken into custody by state police last September after major robberies in the immediate Braddock district.
Harrisburg May 16 United Press reports William Green president of the American Federation of Labor warned that chaos will result unless the National Recovery Act is extended for two years. He denounced NRA supporters as fleeing soldiers and urged unions to mobilize protests nationwide to press Congress for a two year extension and for passage of the Wagner labor bill.
