Lancaster Minutemen Heroes of Revolutionary Era Envisioned
Lancaster and Paxtang rifle companies were early volunteers in the Continental Army authorized by Congress on June 14 1775. The Lancaster unit led by Capt James Ross and Paxtang by Capt Matthew Smith formed under Col William Thompson with Lt Col Edward Hand, part of the Pennsylvanian contingent for the fledgling army later linked to George Washington. The Lancaster Bicentennial plans a reenactment June 28–29 at Central Park Rock Ford featuring 1776 style drills, encampment, and crafts exhibitions under the Conestoga Chapter of the Pennsylvania Guild of Craftsmen. The piece recounts the Minutemen origins and their separate colonial command before integration into the Continental Army.
