Deferment Program Aims at College Students and Tests

College students face a deadline to apply for scholastic aptitude testing to qualify for draft deferments. Tests are scheduled May 26, June 16 and 30, with a July 12 date for religious observers. About 1 million nonveteran males in college could pursue testing, at roughly 1200 centers under Educational Testing Service. The system, run for Navy and other agencies, requires each registrant to cover transport costs. The plan faced a potential rollback from Rep. Kilday, who proposed barring deferments based on any government or private testing, but the House adopted a limited amendment restricting local boards from using such tests for deferments.
