U S Richest Nation Without Ready Cash
Washington May 15 The United States, the richest nation, is short of cash and has borrowed 100 million in short term notes to meet current needs. Of this sum 56 million must be paid by May to clear prior obligations and the end of the fiscal year June 15 looms with a large deficit. Deficit to date stands at 198.4 million versus 162.2 million a year earlier. Tax receipts through June 15 from 1928 incomes are expected near 500 million, but 549.7 million in certificates come due, offsetting most receipts. Officials warn a small surplus, if any, could be under 100 million. The June financing could change the picture and may influence the one per cent income tax cut for 1929.
