Strike Ends In North Ireland After 1-Day General Walkout
In Belfast Protestant militants abandoned a one day general strike led by Rev Ian Paisley saying too many lives had been lost in sectarian strife to risk more. The United Unionist Action Council halted the action at midnight after failing to paralyze the economy. British authorities reopened Larne port by ferries, ending key industrial shutdowns. Three deaths occurred and injuries rose to about 80 with 105 arrests. Officials estimate the cost at roughly 42.5 million dollars.
