Penn Central Sees 1969 Consolidated Profits Drop
Penn Central chairman Stuart T. Saunders says without diversified holdings the railroad would post red ink. Consolidated profits fell to 44 million in 1969 from 87.8 million in 1968, with passenger and freight losses of 56.3 million. The company cuts nonessential spending and 40 percent less capital than 1968 and 1969 amid an extended rail industry downturn. First quarter 1970 shows a 17.2 million loss versus 4.6 million profit a year earlier, as a rail subsidiary incurs a 62.7 million deficit.

In a long task force report they fault weak laws and corporate irresponsibility, saying almost no city street in America is safe. John C. Esposito, lead author, says both leaders pushed a motherhood issue instead of real action.
