Steelworkers meet to set 1949 wage pattern
In Boston on May 1 the Congress of Steelworkers opened a convention with 3,200 delegates from 20,000 members. The union criticized the steel industry for phantom production boosts since 1946 and called for expanding facilities to raise annual steel ingot output by at least 10,000,000 tons. The meeting signals a major stance in 1949 wage demands amid tensions over profits and employment in steel and dependent industries. A second item notes a new ice cube remover patent with a flexible blade to lift cubes from trays.

County grape crop hit by hard winter
Erie County agricultural agent Paul Crossman says much of 1948 grape crop relies on secondary budding after severe winter damage to primary buds. Yields from secondary buds are rarely satisfactory, but overall fruit prospects look good with sweet cherries pollinating well in favorable weather. Sour cherries are developing and in good shape.

Note-Writing Crank Sought After Brookline Terror
Police seek a note writing telephone crank who's haunted the Condello family on Brookline boulevard for 11 months. A girl was said to be shot but Mrs. Fred Condello and daughter Anne were unharmed yet terrified by ongoing calls and threatening notes. The prank began last June with a call claiming Anne's uncle said she was killed, followed by other reports of death or injury to family members. Notes, printed in pencil on torn paper, were left at the house and the crank has tapped the phone line and interrupted conversations.
