Demand for young turkeys dips as chick orders fall
A Federal-State Agricultural Service report shows Pennsylvania farmers demand more young turkeys this spring while hatcheries cut orders for baby chicks. Fertile turkey eggs hatch well, but March and April brought uncertain orders, with some hatcheries canceling further. High feed costs, low egg prices, and draft status concerns reduce chick demand, and several hatcheries may close 4 to 6 weeks earlier than last year.
